Welcome to the
Marcus Whitman
School-Based
Health Center

In the spirit of meeting you where you are, Mosaic Health partnered with the Marcus Whitman School District to open a School-Based Health Center (SBHC) to help students get medical, mental health, and dental services.

How it works.

If you’re like most parents, you may find it hard to schedule different appointments with different providers like your kids’ doctor, dentist, and counselor. They’re all in different locations and have different hours. And what if you can’t get off work? The Marcus Whitman School-Based Health Center brings everything together in one place. It offers you convenience and peace of mind—and our licensed health professionals keep your child’s regular doctor in the loop. Services are available to kids of all ages, regardless of insurance status. We can even help your child get to their appointment at the high school through school-sponsored transportation. Plus, Mosaic Health is installing telehealth equipment in elementary schools so your younger kids can often receive care right at their own school.

WHAT IS A SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTER (SBHC)?

A School-Based Health Center is a health center located on a school campus. SBHCs can provide primary care, mental health and dental care, nutrition education, health education, and many other kinds of support.

WHAT IS THE COST?

Our SBHC provides services at no cost to you, regardless of insurance status. If you do have insurance, Mosaic Health will bill your insurance. If you don’t, you will still not be billed.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?
  • Primary care and urgent care
  • Care for chronic medical conditions
  • Dental services
  • Referrals for additional dental services
  • Screening for vision, hearing, asthma, obesity, and other medical conditions
  • Basic laboratory tests
  • Immunizations (vaccines)
  • Prescribing medication
  • Annual physical exams
  • Help completing forms for summer camp, after school, working papers, and sports
  • Nutrition and health education
  • Mental health counseling
  • Referrals for health insurance
  • Age-appropriate reproductive health care
WHAT STAFF ARE AT THE SBHC?

The SBHC features Mosaic Health staff: Jessica Frazo, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner; Kellie Albert, RN, Program Director; Dr. Melissa Copella DDS; Kimberly Thompson, Dental Hygienist; Lora Hopkins, Lead Dental Assistant; Carla Freeland, LPN; and Shelli Altopp-Miller, Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

DOES THE SBHC TAKE THE PLACE OF MY CHILD’S DOCTOR OR DENTIST?

No, the SBHC staff will work directly with your child’s doctor or dentist to coordinate care.

IF MY CHILD IS REGISTERED FOR DENTAL SERVICES, DO I NEED TO FILL OUT A NEW FORM FOR MEDICAL?

Yes, you do.

WHAT DOES THE CONSENT FORM REQUIRE?

Signing a Consent Form just gives the SBHC permission to treat your child, but completing that form:

  • Does NOT charge your insurance.
  • Does NOT mean you have to receive SBHC services. Students can opt out of services.
  • Does NOT affect the number of times you can see your medical doctor.
CAN MY CHILD RECEIVE CARE AT THE SBHC WITHOUT ENROLLING?

No, all patients must be enrolled by their parent or guardian to receive care.

WHERE DOES MY CHILD GO IF THEY ARE NOT FEELING WELL AT SCHOOL?

Your child will still go to the nurse’s office at school and will get care from either the school nurse or the SBHC nurse practitioner on site. If your child is sick at home and needs care, you can call your SBHC to ask for an appointment.

HOW DOES AN APPOINTMENT AT THE SBHC WORK?

Depending on your child’s school, a pass will be provided to your child so they can go to their appointment. (You’re welcome to come to the appointment with your child, but it is not required.) You may also join via telehealth or in person.

What if my child goes to Valley or Gorham school?

If your child is located at the Valley or Gorham school, you’ll have two choices. We’ll provide transportation during the school day at two designated times or your child can connect with a provider through telehealth right from their school.

HOW CAN I CONNECT MY CHILD TO MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING SERVICES?

First, you need to enroll your child in the SBHC. Here’s a link to the enrollment package. Then your child can be referred by SBHC staff to our Licensed Clinical Social Worker for counseling right here at school.

Peace of mind about the paperwork

No need to worry when you sign your Consent Form, because doing so:
