Marcus Whitman School-Based Health Center

Frequently Asked Questions for Parents

What is a School-Based Health Center (SBHC)?

A School-Based Health Center is a health center located on a school campus. SBHCs can provide primary care, mental health and dental care, nutrition education, health education, and many other kinds of support.

What is the cost?

Our SBHC provides services at no cost to you, regardless of insurance status. If you do have insurance, Mosaic Health will bill your insurance. If you don’t, you will still not be billed.

No, all patients must be enrolled by their parent or guardian to receive care.

Can my child receive care at the SBHC without enrolling?

Yes, you do.

If my child is registered for Dental services, do I need to fill out a new form for medical?

Your child will still go to the nurse’s office at school and will get care from either the school nurse or the SBHC nurse practitioner on site. If your child is sick at home and needs care, you can call your SBHC to ask for an appointment.

Where does my child go if they are not feeling well at school?

Depending on your child’s school, a pass will be provided to your child so they can go to their appointment. (You’re welcome to come to the appointment with your child, but it is not required.)

How does an appointment at the SBHC work?

If your child is from one of the surrounding Marcus Whitman school district schools, we’ll provide transportation during the school day at two designated times. We will schedule students around these two times to make sure they don’t miss too much class time.

What if my child is at a different school in the district?

The SBHC will feature Mosaic Health staff: Jessica Frazo, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Kellie Albert, RN, Dr. Melissa Copella DDS, Kimberly Thompson, Dental Hygienist, Lora Hopkins, Lead Dental Assistant, and Shelli Altopp-Miller, Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

What staff are at the SBHC?

How can I connect my child to mental health counseling services?

First, you need to enroll your child in the SBHC. Below is a link to the enrollment form. Then your child can be referred by SBHC staff to our Licensed Clinical Social Worker for counseling.
